Prof. Saleemul Huq Memorial Public Lecture on “Promoting Climate Justice: The Role of Courts and Youth” on 16.04.2024

A public lecture titled “Promoting Climate Justice: The Role of Courts and Youth” was organized by the Centre for Climate Justice-Bangladesh at the IUB Auditorium in Bashundhara Residential Area, Dhaka on April 16, 2024. The lecture was dedicated in the memory of late Prof. Dr. Saleemul Huq. The event was a collaborative effort among Centre for Climate Justice-Bangladesh (CCJ-B), IUB’s Departments of Law and Environmental Science and Management, International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at NYU School of Law, Bangladesh Environment and Development Society (BEDS), Friendship, World’s Youth for Climate Justice (WYCJ), and Local Conference of Youth Bangladesh (LCOY).

The lectures were delivered by Mr. Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, Minister for Environment, Forest, and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; and Prof. Dr. César Rodríguez-Garavito from New York University School of Law (NYU). Participants of the lecture were from different professions and age categories including high officials from the Government, representatives from different embassies and high commissions, academics, representatives from national and international NGOs, students from universities, colleges and schools and youth activists from different voluntary organizations.

The lectures were followed by a Q & A Session conducted by Adv. M. Hafijul Islam Khan, Director, Centre for Climate Justice-Bangladesh (CCJ-B). Different questions were posed by the audience of the lecture, mostly by school students. Naziba Khandakar from Pledge Harbor International School and Farin Raidah from Sunnydale School have raised the importance of incorporating climate change and climate justice mechanisms in the national school curriculum and arrangement of trainings to all students so that they can have access to these ideas and mechanisms at their early stages of education and develop a better understanding for their future. The session was followed by comments from Dr. Farhina Ahmed, Secretary, MoEFCC; Syeda Rizwana Hasan, Chief Executive, Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (BELA); and Dr. Ainun Nishat, Professor Emeritus, BRAC University. Finally, the program was concluded with a vote of thanks by Mr. Saqib Huq, Managing Director at International Center for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD).
